Dryerventsafety.com is developed as a public service to help keep people safe! A neglected dryer vent can lead to a serious risk of house fire!
Unfortunately, many homeowners are not even aware their dryer vent should be cleaned annually. A clothes dryer's #1 function is to "move air". Vented clothes dryers are designed to evaporate moisture from wet clothes and put it into the air. A dryer facilitates this action by tumbling the clothes in the drum while passing air across those clothes. The air is first heated because the warmer the air is, the more moisture it can hold! As the now hot, steamy air is pulled from the drum the dryer tries to blow that air through the vent system to the outside of your home or business. This may be more obvious in colder weather when can actually see the steam blowing from a vent. When a vent system is restricted, the dryer has to work harder to get the clothes dryer.
When a dryer has to run for an extended period of time due to a restricted vent EVERYTHING in the dryer can get overheated. This includes in any dried, backed-up lint in the dryer cabinet. Should any of this lint get sucked through the heater box in your dryer it could ignite. If the clothes are dry (or close to dry) the burning lint can easily ignite the clothes, especially if they overheated! Most dryer vent fires start IN THE DRYER. As the dryer will continue to run for a period of time, even while the clothes are burning, the dryer will actually fan and blow the fire through the vent. Best case scenario is you have a proper dryer vent system that can contain the fire until you have time to extinguish it. Worst case scenario is a full-on structure fire. It is important to know that fire can double in size every thirty seconds!
Although safety is our number one priority, it is important to know a neglected dryer vent can also lead to:
